Republican Leaders to Governors: Let's Get America Back to Work

With more than 8 million job openings, Republicans urge states to reconnect unemployed workers to jobs

WASHINGTON, D.C. - With Democrats' expanded unemployment benefits crushing Main Street's hiring efforts and sabotaging the country's recovery, top Republican leaders have sent a letter to America's governors urging states to adopt policies that will reconnect unemployed workers with today's 8.1 million job openings, including back-to-work bonuses.

The letter was led by top Republican on the House Ways and Means Committee Kevin Brady (R-TX), House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), Republican Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA), and Republican Leader of the Subcommittee on Worker and Family Support Rep. Jackie Walorski (R-IN).

In the letter, Reps. Brady, McCarthy, Scalise, and Walorski wrote:

'Our local job creators should not have to compete with the federal government for workers. Yet that's exactly what you face in your state's local labor markets. Not only does this hurt the ability of local employers to recover from the economic slowdown of the pandemic, it produces supply shortages at the exact moment massive amounts of consumer stimulus are pushing prices higher, risking out of control inflation. Sadly, Democrats in Congress have refused to work with Republicans on this issue.'

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • Dems' Expanded Unemployment Benefits Are Crushing Main Street: Nearly half of America's small businesses can't fill the job openings they have, forcing job creators to practically beg people to return to the workforce.
  • States Are Leading to Protect Their Economic Recovery: At least 14 states have opted out of federal unemployment benefits months before their September 6 expiration.
  • Our Booming Economic Recovery Will Become a Biden-Bust: Despite an increase in average wages, Dems are paying four in ten unemployed Americans more to stay home than to return to the workforce - sabotaging our jobs recovery.
