Six S-A-F-E-T-Y Tips for Seniors

Taking a break your usual routine can be both fun and refreshing. For older adults, it's important to keep everyday health and safety practices in mind when traveling and enjoying holiday celebrations at home throughout the year. With some intentional planning and practice, spelled out with the six S-A-F-E-T-Y tips below, you can feel you best and enjoy your time with family and friends.

STAY Hydrated

Water is your best friend when it comes to staying hydrated, and hydration is central to your health and well-being. Remember alcohol is dehydrating. Often, our bodies do not feel thirsty until our bodies are already on the way to being much too dry. Do not wait till you feel thirsty to drink!

ALLOW Time for Rest

Being out of your normal routine can be exhausting. Fatigue can make seniors extra vulnerable to falls, skipping important meals, and lowering your immune response. Plan for periods of rest each day.

FOLLOW Your Routine Dietary Guidelines and Restrictions

Rich meals and tasty treats can be tempting, but over indulgence can also de-rail your health and your holiday. Here are some tips for people with diabetes.

EMBRACE Emotion

If you have experienced a loss, holidays or returning to favorite vacation spots may be extra difficult. It is normal for emotions of sadness and loss to surface. Don't ignore them. Reach out to family, friends, or your primary care provider to get needed support.

TRAVEL Wisely

Keep hand sanitizer readily available on your trip no matter how short or long. Take along medications and your routine over-the-counter remedies. If you use inhalers or a nebulizer machine be sure to pack those items as well. When you are out of your routine it is easy to miss doses of medications and treatments.

You Are Your Own Best Advocate

Don't be afraid to use your voice to speak up and make your own personal health and safety a priority. Being open and honest helps assure a relaxing and enjoyable time for everyone...especially you!
