Art Deco celebrates life; it reflects the fantasies and excesses of a society externalizing the desire for a boisterous, frenzied existence, which is felt only by those who have experienced the horrors of a world war at first hand.
The Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes gave this style its name in 1925, in a society that moved to the rhythms of jazz and the Charleston, and whose watchword was Modernity.
The Empire State Building and Radio City Music Hall are the secular temples of that magic period, as described in the pages of F. Scott Fitzgerald's 'The Great Gatsby'.
Geometric shapes, porcelain-tiled floors, pastel colours, the aluminium and the neon lights conjure up a vision of the Art Deco Historic District in Miami - still today the place with the highest concentration of Art Deco in the world.
