Governor Kemp Signs Rep. Jesse Petrea’s Georgia Criminal Alien Track and Report Act of 2024

ATLANTA - Today, State Representative Jesse Petrea (R-Savannah) joined Governor Brian Kemp as he signed House Bill 1105, the Georgia Criminal Alien Track and Report Act of 2024, into law at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center in Forsyth, Ga. Sponsored by Rep. Petrea, this legislation requires Georgia law enforcement officials to work in conjunction with federal immigration authorities and to send, receive and maintain information relating to the immigration status of any individual as reasonably needed for public safety purposes.

"I appreciate Governor Kemp signing HB 1105 into law to further emphasize our commitment to public safety in Georgia," said Rep. Petrea. "Certain sheriffs, sworn to uphold and enforce state laws, are currently ignoring these laws. This law addresses these issues by implementing enforceable consequences for noncompliance. I was proud to sponsor this legislation, which simply puts the safety and well-being of Georgia's residents and families first."

HB 1105 requires Georgia law enforcement to work with federal immigration authorities and mandates sharing immigration status information to improve public safety. Sheriff's offices or law enforcement agencies that fail to comply with these requirements may face consequences, such as funding withholding. Additionally, the bill establishes specific booking procedures for aliens and foreign nationals, requires jailers to submit quarterly reports on immigration-related matters and imposes penalties for any violations of these provisions.

Representative Jesse Petrea represents the citizens of District 166, which includes portions of Bryan and Chatham counties. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2014 and currently serves as Chairman of the Human Relations & Aging Committee and as Secretary of the Game, Fish & Parks Committee. He also serves on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Health and the Health, Industry and Labor, Natural Resources & Environment and Public Safety and Homeland Security committees.
