Obituary Cyril Snare

Published on: 29 October 2020

After a long career in the marine industry, Cyril Snare, the former face of Mermaid Marine engines, has sadly died aged75.

From joining Mermaid Marine in 1973 to his retirement in 2010, Cyril shared his love for all things nautical, supplying a range of Ford based diesel engines designed to offer strong performance and reliability to leisure, commercial and military customers. He combined this with a personal after sales experience, based on his mantra of 'treat people how you would like to be treated'.

During his time at the helm, the Ministry of Defence awarded Mermaid Marine the prestigious AQAP 4 certification for engines up to 400hp, powering more than 100 Pacific 22 RIBs in service with the Royal Navy.

Network

Cyril built an international distribution network with Mermaid engines installed in all types of vessels across the globe from the Canadian Maritime Provinces to the Caribbean Islands, Europe, Middle East, Far East and Oceania regions.

This was combined with a domestic market for Mermaid engines, such as powering the Princess 37 as well as many commercial craft; Mermaid Marine enjoyed its place as Ford's leading approved mariniser.

Cyril enjoyed the camaraderie and friendly rivalry with Mermaid's competitors, but nothing made him happier than attending boat shows around the globe supporting every part of the Mermaid family, often accompanied by his wife Barbara. He will be sadly missed and a great loss to the industry.
