Former student restaurant at Pauscollege named after young Leuven resistance heroine Hortense Daman

After extensive renovations at Pauscollege, the former residence restaurant is getting a new purpose and a new name. The space, which will now host lectures, debates, and seminars, will be named after Hortense Daman, a young resistance heroine who played a crucial role in Leuven during World War II.

The former student restaurant of Pauscollege, centrally located and rich in history, will carry the name 'Hortense Daman'. This room will be used for lectures, debates, and seminars in the future, providing a space for dialogue and reflection, fitting the life and legacy of Daman.

"Naming this space after Hortense Daman reflects our commitment to recognizing courageous figures in our history. Her story is a powerful example of youthful initiative and dedication in times of great injustice. We hope that her name and legacy will inspire students to actively contribute to a more just and peaceful world, especially in times of war and unprecedented polarization." - Rector Luc Sels

Hortense Daman, who was active in the resistance as a teenager during the war, is a source of inspiration for many. Her courage and determination have lasting significance and show how young people can have an extraordinary impact in times of conflict.

This recognition of Daman's heroism aligns with other initiatives, such as the Wijkcomité Pleinstraat, including a mural, a reissue of the book about her life, and her honorary citizenship of the city of Leuven. Guided tours are also organized in neighborhoods that played a central role in the resistance during WWII.
