See How Education Institutions Are Preparing for the Classrooms and Campuses of Tomorrow

With academic institutions switching from remote to hybrid to in-person learning and back again over the past 18 months, faculty, administrators, and students had to re-examine their notions of what education looks like. Now, schools and universities are weighing how to improve equity, inclusiveness, accessibility, and engagement as they emerge from the pandemic to meet the needs of current and future students.

At Zoomtopia 2021, Zoom's education team and customers explored these topics and more, sharing what they've learned and looking ahead to what the future holds for education.

Zoom's vision for education

"How do we make education fair and equitable for every learner across the world?"

That was the question posed by Zoom's education solutions lead, Pat La Morte, during this year's Zoomtopia education keynote. As La Morte, a former educator and school administrator suggested, the key to answering that question involves understanding that learning happens everywhere. He detailed how schools and universities are solving connectivity challenges and increasing access to education with new tools and partnerships.

La Morte shared how Zoom's innovative platform helps connect academic institutions for teaching and learning, parent meetings, faculty interviews, tutoring sessions, community events, and more. He also invited educators and academic leaders to join the Zoom Education Community to continue the conversation.

We also heard from Ted Brodheim, Zoom's global CIO advisor for education; Tain Barzso, education product lead; and Lance Ford, Zoom Rooms educator, on where they see education heading in the next 10 years. They agreed that deep personalization and accessibility, driven by technology - such as instant translation powered by AI - have the potential to create powerful learning experiences that would not be possible in a traditional in-person classroom. Schools and universities are already gaining access to advanced tools that will allow them to transform education, and the pace of adoption will accelerate as those tools become more widely available.

"This interplay between what's being delivered, how it's being delivered, and where it's being delivered will all become choices that will be much easier to implement over the next couple of years," Brodheim said.

Bringing immersive experiences to the classroom

Zoomtopia has always been a celebration of our customers and the incredible, innovative ways they're using Zoom. We were fortunate to have educational leaders share some of the creative ways they're transforming their learning environments.

Columbia University uses Zoom and Miro, a visual collaboration tool, to design amazing immersive experiences. Associate professor and Columbia Digital Storytelling Lab director Lance Weiler shared how he threaded elements of game design, experience design, storytelling, and art together to build a "classroom without walls" - where students can collaborate, create, and imagine new possibilities.

The California State Parks Online Resources for Teachers and Students (PORTS) program has been providing virtual learning experiences to learners of all ages for nearly 20 years. PORTS program manager Brad Krey discussed how expanding traditional classrooms to the great outdoors through video has helped improve access and equity for students unable to visit a state park in person. Ralph Krauss, who works in Digital Innovations for Pinecrest Academy of Nevada and Academica Virtual Education, shared how he has been working to bring guest speakers from entertainment, politics, sports, and business to thousands of students via livestreaming.

Building the classrooms of the future

Zoom Rooms educator Lance Ford broke down in-person, blended, virtual, hybrid, and "hyflex" learning models to help customers figure out which options fit best with their school or university. Ford showed how Zoom Rooms can power hybrid and hyflex classrooms with features like wireless sharing, digital signage, and interactive whiteboarding.

Melissa Griggs, director of Zoom's grant partner Learn Design Apply, joined us for an in-depth look at how U.S. institutions can use COVID-19 stimulus funding to help prepare for the future. She went over the different grant opportunities available for K-12 and higher education institutions and discussed how to create a sustainable funding strategy that prepares schools and universities for post-pandemic needs.
