Third Atlantic Council Global Energy Forum Addresses Geopolitical and Sustainability Challenges

Abu Dhabi - As part of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, the Atlantic Council officially launched its third-annual Global Energy Forum in the UAE capital today. The three-day premier event gathers international and regional industry leaders in Abu Dhabi to address the geopolitical, energy and sustainability challenges and opportunities of the future.

The Forum is hosted under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the United Arab Emirates Armed Forces. It is convened in partnership with the Ministry of Energy & Industry of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), and Mubadala Investment Company, with Sharjah-based Crescent Petroleum as Platinum Co-Chair.

On the official opening of the event, global and regional policymakers and business leaders set the 2019 energy policy agenda and policy framework, addressing geopolitics, economic uncertainty, and new technologies dominating the energy conversation. Participants of the discussion included:

  • H.E. Suhail Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Industry, United Arab Emirates
  • Lisa Davis, Chief Executive Officer, Energy, and Member of the Managing Board, Siemens AG
  • Brian Hook, US Special Representative for Iran and Senior Policy Advisor to the Secretary of State, US Department of State
  • Majid Jafar, Chief Executive Officer, Crescent Petroleum

Other speakers on the opening day included: H.E. Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of State, United Arab Emirates and Chief Executive Officer, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company and Musabbeh Al-Kaabi, CEO, Petroleum and Petrochemicals, Mubadala Investment Company.

Elsewhere, the first day also included an address by The Hon. Ernest Moniz, President and CEO, Energy Futures Initiative; former Secretary, US Department of Energy, on new energy technologies and new energy geopolitics and a session on meeting the Asian energy demand in an increasingly volatile price environment.

The second day of the Global Energy Forum will feature a plenary address on Saudi's vision 2030 and the oil market, with H.E. Khalid Al-Falih, Minister of Energy, Industry, and Mineral Resources, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. To livestream the Forum, please watch here.

Also, on the agenda for day two are sessions on the decarbonization of oil and gas and the future of shale. In addition, the Atlantic Council will launch its latest reports 'Sovereign Investors: A Means for Economic Diversification,' and 'Meeting East Asian LNG Demand.'
