WASHINGTON, DC -Rosa DeLauro (CT-03), Chair of the House Appropriations Committee and Chair of the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Subcommittee, issued this statement on the Inspector General of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) report that the agency misused millions in taxpayer dollars intended for the development of vaccines, drugs, and therapeutics:
'No matter who is in the White House, Congress holds the power of the purse, and taxpayer money must be spent for the intended purpose. Given the critical function the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) plays in combatting public health threats, like the coronavirus pandemic, we must get to the bottom of this misuse of funds. I have long had concerns about the opacity of the status of BARDA. Given the significant investments we have made during the pandemic, it is imperative we move forward with guardrails to protect this funding from misuse.
'I thank the whistleblower who came forward with this information. As Chair of the House Appropriations Committee, I am committed to ensuring this bravery is met with accountability.'
