Dallas ISD News: Dallas ISD News Briefing: Aug. 4

NEWS RELEASE
For Immediate Release: Aug. 4, 2021

DALLAS - For the upcoming school year, every Dallas ISD campus will have rapid COVID-19 tests available to school staff and students, which will provide results in about 15 minutes. Tests can be requested through the school nurse and students under 18 will need to bring a consent form from their parents to receive the test.

Since classes will be 100% in person this year, we want our families to know that we will continue to prioritize safety for all our students and staff. Additionally, we will continue to recommend the use of masks, make PPE available at every campus, and continue frequent sanitation and cleaning measures.

Dallas ISD is hiring new teachers
As students begin their return to in-person learning, we are still looking for top talent to join our team. Since March, we have hired more than 1,600 teachers and still have positions available for interested candidates. To fill these vacancies, we will hold an in-person job fair tomorrow, Aug. 5, at 4 p.m. at Skyline High School. Applicants will have the opportunity to meet and interview on site with our principals and hiring teams.

Applicants are encouraged to apply prior to the event by filling out this online form.

District's Reading Academies launch Year Two of the program
Last year, during its first year, the Reading Academies helped train over 1,200 teachers (99.3% of participants) with the best methods and practices to support student literacy development. Now, we are off and running for year two of this initiative, with over 1,300 teachers slated for this year. Throughout the year, all participants will engage in a total of 10 days of training. The academies play a central role in the district's 'Path to 60' goal which states that 60 percent of students will meet or exceed third grade reading level on the STAAR test by 2025.
Upcoming enrollment events
All new and returning students must be enrolled to attend school. Visit https://www.dallasisd.org/enroll or visit a Dallas ISD One Center to enroll or request assistance. Additionally, to assist families who need help with the process, the district will be hosting two enrollment events this week:

  • At 9:45 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 5, we will visit families at selected low-enrollment locations across the district, to provide information and on-site assistance with the process.
  • At 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 7, we will host an in-person back to school enrollment fair at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center to help parents enroll their children.

Parents can also find answers to many of the questions about the upcoming school year by visiting https://www.dallasisd.org/ready.
If you wish to cover any of these events, please contact a member of the News and Information team.

Visuals ahead of second 'first day' of school available
If you are seeking visuals or a back-to-school preview story ahead of our second 'first day' of school on Monday, Aug. 9, we will have availability at Jack Lowe Elementary School. Teachers will be decorating hallways and setting up classrooms this week as they prepare to welcome students back to a fun and exciting 'Around the World' themed school.
