Santa Fe, N.M. - Please see the following statement from PETA Foundation Associate Director of Captive Animal Law Enforcement Rachel Mathews regarding tonight's vote by the Santa Fe City Council to ban the use of wild and exotic animals in circuses and other traveling acts through a bill sponsored by Councilor Signe Lindell:

Santa Feans demanded a more compassionate city, and Councilor Signe Lindell has heard them and delivered. Santa Fe now joins New York City, San Francisco, and other cities in banning exhibitors that profit from animal misery, and PETA looks forward to a day when circuses and other businesses that beat, whip, and electrically shock animals are shunned at every corner of the country.

PETA-whose motto reads, in part, that 'animals are not ours to use for entertainment'-provided video evidence, alerted its more than 3,500 local supporters, and had a spokesperson present testimony at Santa Fe's city council hearing.

More information about circuses that use animals is available here.
