The ASEAN-Korea Centre (Secretary General Kim Hae-yong) will hold the '2021 ASEAN-Korea Tourism Capacity-Building Workshop' under the theme 'The Future of Tourism: Challenges and Opportunities,' on November 29 (Mon) at 11:00 (KST). The workshop, co-organized by the Ministry of Tourism (MoT) of the Kingdom of Cambodia and the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism (MICT) of Lao PDR, will identify some of the on-going changes in the tourism industry and explore various strategies to promote safe tourism as countries begin to re-open borders amidst the pandemic. Experts from the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO), Korea Culture and Tourism Institute (KCTI), Hanyang University and Yanolja will participate in this year's workshop, which will be livestreamed on the Centre's official YouTube channel.

The event will consist of two sessions. In the first session, stakeholders from the Laotian tourism industry will delve into the on-going changing trends of the global tourism industry in the aftermath of the pandemic. In the second session, stakeholders from the Cambodian tourism industry will discuss ways to reskill and upskill the workforce in response to the new tourism environment. As of mid-November, Cambodia as re-opened its border to fully vaccinated travelers who can now enter the country without quarantine. With the assumption of ASEAN Chairmanship in 2022, Cambodia is expected to strengthen its tourism sector to attract greater number of foreign tourists.

Meanwhile, ASEAN was the top overseas destination for Koreans prior to the spread of COVID-19. In 2019, more than 10 million Koreans visited the ASEAN region. As more countries in the region re-open their borders to travelers, this year's workshop is expected to provide a useful platform for tourism professionals to share various strategies on revitalizing ASEAN-Korea exchanges.
