Super Saturday in Bratislava as Slovakia stun Chile

Norbert Gombos put on a masterclass against Cristian Garin as Slovakia clinched a famous victory over Chile in Davis Cup by Rakuten World Group I on Saturday.

Gombos, ranked 100 places lower than his Chilean opponent, could do no wrong as he raced to a 6-0 6-1 victory in just 50 minutes to clinch a 3-1 victory in the tie overall.

Earlier in the day, Slovakia had moved in front thanks to the doubles pairing of Filip Polasek and Igor Zelenay proving too strong for Tomas Barrios and Alejandro Tabilo.

The home duo only needed one hour and 22 minutes to win 6-1 7-6(4) much to the delight of energetic captain Tibor Toth on the sidelines.

Slovakia must wait for the outcome of the remaining World Group I ties before finding out whether they will progress directly to the Davis Cup Qualifiers in February next year or whether they will have to compete in the World Group I Knock-outs in November.

For Chile, it will be a World Group I Play-off in February, from where they will look to get back into the Qualifiers, and therefore the Davis Cup Final, in 2023.
