Liberation Day hampers gifted to residential homes

Once again this Liberation Day, more than 800 islanders living in residential homes or attending Age Concern groups across the island will receive Liberation Day themed hampers.

The hampers will be packed with buttermilk cake, milk, Guernsey butter, chocolate bars, Guernsey biscuits and Guernsey cheddar, as well as traditional ration cards and information about the contents. Deliveries to the residential homes will take place on 8 May and will make their way to Age Concern groups in the week leading up to Liberation Day.

The hamper is designed specifically to be reminiscent of items that would have been received in Red Cross Parcels during the Occupation.

Deputy Sue Aldwell, Member of the Committee for Education, Sport and Culture and Liberation Day Organising Committee, said:

'We're delighted to once again be delivering hampers to the residential homes and Age Concern groups as we know how well they are received. The hampers, and the wartime songs many of the homes sing around this time, prompt memories and gives residents the opportunity to talk about their experiences of the war. We want to always ensure that the older generation is able to actively participate in Liberation Day.'

For the third consecutive year, Guernsey Dairy continues its support by generously providing local dairy products for the Liberation Day hampers. Additionally, the Dairy has contributed its latest product, buttermilk, to the traditional Guernsey Buttermilk cake, a new offering in this year's hamper.

Andrew Tabel, Managing Director of Guernsey Dairy emphasised the significance of Liberation Day.

'Liberation Day aims to ensure that as many residents across the island feel part of the commemorations and celebrations. Many of the older generation are not able to go out and do this in person so our involvement in the Liberation Day hamper initiative holds special importance to us.'
