Port of Halifax and CN Welcome Largest Containerized Cargo Vessel to call at a Canadian Port

CN was proud to collaborate with our supply chain partners CMA CGM, PSA Halifax, and the Halifax Port Authority in order to welcome the largest containerized cargo vessel in history to call at a Canadian port.

Measuring 366 metres in length with a capacity of 15,072 TEU, the CMA CGM Brazil berthed on September 9, 2020 at the Port of Halifax's South End Container Terminal, PSA Halifax, as part of the weekly Columbus JAX service from South Asia to the East Coast. As the exclusive rail service provider to the Port of Halifax, CN will be handling all of the containers imported via the Halifax gateway by this ship as they travel to market via CN's transcontinental railway.

This successful inaugural call comes after PSA Halifax received its new ship-to-shore Super-Post-Panamax crane in July. This mega crane, the largest in Eastern Canada, is able to lift cargo more than 51 meters from the ground and has an outreach of 66 meters that can span across 24 containers. PSA Halifax also nears completion of a deep-water extension that will bring total quay length to 800 meters in order to have the capacity to accommodate two ultra-class ships at a time.

Similarly, CN has invested heavily in our rail infrastructure in Nova Scotia, alongside our robust investments in the rest of our network. Over the last five years, CN has spent approximately $85 million in capital investments to expand and strengthen Nova Scotia's rail infrastructure.
