Algeria hosts final planning conference for joint Russian-Algerian exercise Desert Shield 2022

For the first time, Algeria will host a joint Russian-Algerian counter-terrorism exercise, Desert Shield 2022. The second - final planning conference to prepare for the joint Russian-Algerian exercise was held in the Beshar province of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria.

Representatives of the Southern Military District (SMD) and the Algerian National People's Army approved the timing, concept and scenario of the exercise, the composition of forces and equipment, and defined the theme, objectives, tasks and phases of the joint exercise.

The exercise will focus on the tactical search, detection and elimination of terrorist groups in desert terrain.

The exercise will take place this November at the Hamagir firing range in Algeria. About 80 servicemen from the South Caucasus motorised rifle formations deployed in the North Caucasus and about 80 servicemen from the Algerian armed forces are to be involved in the events.

The first joint Russian-Algerian tactical exercise was held in October 2021 at the Tarskoye training ground in North Ossetia. Some 200 Russian and Algerian soldiers took part in the exercise, which involved around 40 pieces of military and special equipment.
