Nova central fotovoltaica da Navigator aumenta produção de energia elétrica renovável livre de CO2

The largest and new photovoltaic solar power plant by The Navigator Company, a member of AIP since 18 March 1977, has been working since January in the industrial complex of Figueira da Foz, on a self-consumption basis, and increases the production of renewable electric energy with zero emissions of CO2.

Composed of 7 700 photovoltaic solar panels, the plant has an installed capacity of approximately 2.6 MW, which will prevent the emission of approximately 1.296 tCO2 per year, also contributing to the reduction of the volume of energy purchased from the grid. electrical.

This is the company's fourth project in the field of solar energy, a sector in which it has already invested more than 4.7 million euros, guaranteeing the installation of 17 200 photovoltaic solar panels, which correspond to an approximate area of 28 500 m2.

The Navigator Company was the first Portuguese company, and one of the first worldwide, to make a commitment to anticipate its carbon neutrality by 15 years in relation to national and European targets.

The decarbonisation strategy carried out by the company foresees that in 2035 all of its industrial complexes will be carbon neutral, investing a total of 154 million euros for the fulfillment of this mission, of which 55 million euros, about 35%, already were carried out in 2019 and 2020.

The Navigator produces about 2.5 TWh of electricity per year, more than 60% from biomass, being responsible for an average of about 4% of the national production of electricity and 52% of the electricity produced from biomass in Portugal.

There are four self-consumption photovoltaic plants of the company: in Setúbal, on the roof of one of the paper machines; in Pegões, at Herdade de Espirra; in Aveiro, at Raiz - Forest Research Institute; and, now, in the industrial complex of Figueira da Foz. Together, these plants allow to reach, at the end of this year, about 5 MW of installed capacity, from solar energy.

It supplies around 130 countries and employs over 30,000 workers

The Navigator Company is, since 2016, the new brand heir to the heritage of the ex-Portucel Soporcel group. It is an integrated producer of forest, pulp and paper, tissue and energy, whose activity is based on modern large-scale factories, with the latest technology and which constitute a benchmark for quality in the sector.

The Navigator Company produces pulp and paper using forests that are planted exclusively for this purpose and give life to more than 12 million plants every year. These nurseries, the largest in Europe, produce 135 different species of trees and shrubs, a large part of which, having no economic viability, are financed by the company with the aim of maintaining diversity and guaranteeing the continuity of the species.

The forests under management by The Navigator Company in Portugal have a carbon stock, excluding carbon in the soil, equivalent to 5.3 million tons of CO2, a value that remains stable thanks to the sustainable management model followed by the company.

The company is the third largest exporter in Portugal and the largest generator of National Added Value, representing approximately 1% of the national GDP, about 3% of the national exports of goods, and more than 30 thousand direct, indirect and induced jobs. In 2020, The Navigator Company had a turnover of € 1.38 billion. More than 90% of the group's products are sold outside Portugal and are destined for approximately 130 countries.
