The 2018 NAIAS will serve as a backdrop for Premier Sponsor The Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI) to showcase how advanced high-strength steel (AHSS), which includes third-generation AHSS, is incorporated into tomorrow's vehicles, including autonomous ones.
At its Tuesday, Jan. 16 press conference in the Cobo Center Concourse, SMDI will look at how steel is contributing to driving automotive innovation. On display will be body-in-white exhibits of the 2017 Chevy Bolt (2017 North American Car of the Year award winner) and the 2018 Honda Odyssey (a finalist for the 2018 North American Utility of the Year).
'There are more than 200 grades of steel available to automakers today, which demonstrates collaboration with automakers and drives innovation in the automotive industry, by offering engineers the right material for the right application,' said Jody Hall, vice president of the automotive market for SMDI. 'Results are reflected in vehicle performance, value, improved strength, fuel economy and durability.'
SMDI will also reveal its 2018 Men and Women of Steel Awards. Now in its fourth year, the award program recognizes individuals for their innovative uses and applications of steel at work and in the community.
Sponsored by AK Steel Corporation, ArcelorMittal and Nucor Corporation, the SMDI exhibit will be located in the Cobo Concourse across from Hall B, Jan. 15 - 18.
