SPIE responsible for technical facility management at the Olympic Park campus of the Technical University of Munich
Munich, 31 August 2021 - SPIE Deutschland & Zentraleuropa, the German subsidiary of SPIE, the independent European leader in multi-technical services in the areas of energy and communications, has been awarded a contract to perform technical facility management at the Olympic Park campus of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) as part of a tender invited by the Free State of Bavaria, represented by TUM. The new sports and health campus of the Department of Sport and Health Sciences at TUM as well as for the University Sports Center Munich will combine research and teaching with sports and leisure for around 3,000 students and 17,000 sports enthusiasts every semester from all of Munich's universities - and in total harmony with the heritage-protected Olympic Park. From late August 2021, the multi-technical service provider will become responsible for technical building management for the second construction phase, which is nearing completion, as well as for an existing building and the beach and tennis grounds.
There from the beginning
The TUM campus in the Olympic Park, which was constructed for the 1972 Summer Olympics, is undergoing an extensive facelift from the architectural practice Dietrich | Untertrifaller, taking place over two phases (BA 2 and BA 3). The project will result in the biggest, most state-of-the-art sports and health campus in Europe. The campus, which covers around 42,000 square metres, will house all the facilities owned by TUM's Department of Sport and Health Sciences as well as the University Sports Center Munich, such as the extensive outdoor facilities including beach volleyball and tennis courts, a fitness course, a large athletics facility, 14 sports halls, indoor and outdoor climbing facilities, twelve auditoriums and seminar rooms, diagnostic rooms as well as medical outpatients' departments, workshops, 300 offices for the scientific institutions and administration, a cafeteria and a library. 'The new sports and health campus in the Olympic Park is a fantastic flagship project - for the world of sports, for the students and for the city of Munich. This is why we are so proud to enjoy the privilege of managing this unique site and, with our experienced team, to support the department and university sports organisation in their mission to combine research and teaching as well as sports and leisure all on one site,' said Hermes Tillmann, Manager of the Munich Branch at SPIE Deutschland & Zentraleuropa.
Once the second phase is complete, SPIE will be responsible for technical management for the new building, one existing building and the beach and tennis facility. This will include the servicing and maintenance of technical installations such as the electrical systems, sanitary technology and HVAC technology. 'We are assuming responsibility for technical building operations from September. From then on, two technicians will be on site at all times to ensure that the technical facilities are fully functional at all times,' said Franz Mayer, the responsible project manager at SPIE Deutschland & Zentraleuropa. 'But we are already hard at work right now because we have been tasked with providing support during commissioning as well as testing and maintaining operation of the new building until it is handed over to TUM.' In the process, the multi-technical service provider is ensuring that the project makes the transition to routine operation without any hitches along the way. 'Thanks to our qualified and diverse workforce, we at SPIE have extensive, broad-based expertise. For the introductory phase, for example, we called in experts from within the company who specialise in the supervision of new building projects and bring their extensive experience,' said Hermes Tillmann.
Qualified teams for the laboratory environment
The existing on-campus Prevention Center will also include a number of diagnostic rooms where Safety Level 1 work will be performed. Special safety requirements apply here regarding access and conduct in the event of disruptions and emergencies. 'Our teams regularly receive the necessary training and instructions,' says Hermes Tillmann.
Start of a successful partnership
This is the first time that SPIE has been tasked with property management on behalf of the Technical University of Munich. 'We are proud that TUM has chosen SPIE. We are confident that this will mark the start of a long and trusting relationship for both parties,' said Andreas Schmutzler, General Manager of the South Region in the Efficient Facilities operational division at SPIE Deutschland & Zentraleuropa.
