Next stop, Johannesburg and Jakarta!

The ongoing recovery of Western Australia's aviation sector has been given a major boost with the announcement of new Qantas services to Johannesburg and Jakarta.

Perth Airport CEO Kevin Brown said Perth Airport had been working hard to re-build international connections into Perth.

"We've already had considerable success in our efforts with a return of 50 per cent of pre-Covid flight frequencies with 12 international airlines operating to 10 overseas destinations," Mr Brown said.

"The support of the State Government and Tourism WA has been vital to securing these early wins.

"The new Qantas direct services to Johannesburg and Jakarta are another important step toward full recovery.

"Indonesia is an important trading and business partner for Western Australia and is also a popular tourist destination.

"Western Australia has a large ex-pat South African community who will welcome the direct service to Johannesburg, while it will also be a popular route for the resources sector and other Perth-based companies who do business in Africa.

"We've worked constructively with Qantas to help bring the Perth-London route back sooner than planned, and also to set up the new Perth-Rome service.

"We're pleased that we've been able to reach agreement on the Jakarta and Johannesburg routes and will be working closely with the local Qantas team to ensure they are a success."
