Plant Genetic Resources training for scientists

The banana sucker is cut off at the base followed by carving a hole right into the core of the root (corm) to destroy it. Removing banana suckers from the main plant helps it to bear a bigger fruit. Plant Genetic Resources Scientist Janet Paofa demonstrates how to destroy a banana sucker during a Plant Genetic Resources (PGR) training with scientific staff from the Momase Regional Centre at Bubia in Lae, Morobe province.

A similar training was run in Kerevat, East New Britain, Aiyura in Eastern Highlands and Tambul in Western Highlands
