WyCo/KCK Receives Bronze Level Recognition as a Community for all ages

Published on May 01, 2024

Kansas City, KS - Last month, Wyandotte County and Kansas City, KS was acknowledged by the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) for receiving Bronze Level Recognition as a Community for All Ages (CFAA). A community for all ages seeks to meet the needs and interests of the very old, the very young and everyone in between.

KC Communities for All Ages is an age-friendly initiative that helps increase awareness in local jurisdictions of the impact of a growing older population. The program offers tools to help meet the needs of older adults in ways that benefit residents of all ages.

Through the collaboration of various Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, KS (UG) departments, community organizations, and an adopted resolution from UG officials, this designation signifies an ongoing commitment to ensure residents have the needed amenities to live a fulfilling life regardless of their age.

"I'm happy to be involved in our community's efforts to attain status as a Communities for all Ages community," said At-Large District 1 Commissioner Melissa Bynum. "We have Unified Government staff working together across departments and will be engaging numerous outside agencies and community members to help us move forward in becoming a city where one can live from birth to death, with the needed amenities and supports. It's exciting work!"

The pursuit of the CFAA program and completion of all three recognition levels aligns with the strategic initiatives outlined in the PlanKCK comprehensive plan as well as the Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP). This designation will seek focus on community safety, prosperity, connectiveness, and inclusivity.

Communities can apply for and earn three levels of recognition:

  • Bronze: For Awareness
  • Silver: For Assessment
  • Gold: For Implementation

"A community that can sustain families and people for lifelong, is a community that is inclusive of diverse cultures, programs, policies, and infrastructure," said Area Agency on Aging Director Ruth Jones. "A Community for all ages is one that promotes a Quality of Life for all of its citizens that is supported throughout our various life cycle."

Stay tuned for a variety of engagement opportunities as the Unified Government works toward reaching silver-level recognition.
