Friends of the Millbrae Library

Created in 1976, the Friends of the Millbrae Library is a non-profit public benefit corporation whose mission is to encourage membership, volunteerism, and fundraising to support literacy throughout the community. The Friends provide financial support and advocacy for library services, infrastructure, programming, educational opportunities, and community connections.

People of all ages can enjoy programs year-round supported by the Friends. Children can boost their learning experience through the Summer Learning Program, the afterschool homework center, and programs that feature magicians, jugglers, and wild animals. Similarly, teenagers benefit from hands-on educational courses, art projects, and computer classes. Lastly, adult programs range from fun cooking classes to in-depth book discussions and art classes.

The majority of these programs are supported financially by the Friends of the Millbrae Library. The group provides technology and library equipment, as well as hosts a yearly musical open house and a variety of community cultural events.

The Friends also encourage and assist the activities of other Millbrae Community groups, such as MCTV and the Man and Woman of the Year. Friends volunteers help staff the Art and Wine Festival booths and support the Chinese New Year and the Japanese Cultural Festival.

Most significantly, the Friends wrote a grant that funded the Mid-Autumn Festival, which has become an annual event for Millbrae and other San Mateo County libraries. This effort, along with their other programs, was possible due to community support and donations.

The Millbrae community is fortunate to have such an active Friends group. On average, the Friends raise over $50,000 annually through their book sales and other programs, and contribute these funds to support vital library programs.

The Friends of the Millbrae Library welcome help from residents and guests in providing the best evolving resources for the community.
