PEORIA, Ariz. (Sept. 28, 2022) -Mayor Cathy Carlat and City Council proclaim Sept. 28, 2022 National Good Neighbor Day to encourage a spirit of kindness, respect, and concern for neighbors. Residents are encouraged to participate by nominating a neighbor and learning about Peoria's community engagement activities.

"The City of Peoria strives to be good neighbors to our wonderful community, and building relationships that strengthen neighborhoods and communities are vitally important," said Mayor Carlat. "Although we continue to grow, it's programs like these that remind us of the small town values we all share."

In recognition of Good Neighbor Day, residents are encouraged to nominate a neighbor that has gone above and beyond to be a good neighbor. Those nominated will be entered for a chance to receive a local gift certificate. Nominations may be submitted online by clicking on the Good Neighbor Program at www.peoriaaz.gov/engage.

Peoria is also encouraging neighbors to connect and meet with their neighbors. Good neighbor magnets, with space to fill in contact information, will be available for residents to pick up at Peoria's libraries, Community Center and Rio Vista Recreation Center.

"Connecting neighbors and residents is at the core of what we do and we are proud to kick off National Good Neighbor Day by featuring these great programs," said Chris Hallett, Neighborhood and Human Service Director. "Whether a resident chooses to nominate a neighbor or pick up a good neighbor magnet, I hope residents join us as we celebrate the actions of good neighbors."

Peoria offers several programs that support healthy neighborhoods such as the neighborhood grants program, neighborhood pride, the pop-up van, the tool lending center, and a block party trailer. The block party trailer was designed for Peoria residents and to support the social development of neighborhoods and to help build relationships between neighbors. The program features a trailer that can be reserved online for a four-hour window on a Friday or Saturday from October through May, excluding blackout dates and major holidays. The trailer is free to reserve and includes items to support a successful block party including tables and chairs, giant yard games, and more. National Good Neighbor Day is an annual event that was created in the early 1970's by Becky Mattson of Lakeside, Montana in an effort to build and strengthen connections among neighbors. In 1978, President Jimmy Carter declared the day a national holiday. Take the national "Good Neighbor" pledge at www.nationalgoodneighborday.com.
