Healthy Cooking Instructor

Are you passionate about healthy cooking and love to work with the community? Healthy RC is looking for a dynamic cooking instructor who can teach weekly classes for youth and adults.

We are hiring someone who can teach fun and easy breakfast, lunch, and dinner recipes. Bilingual instructors preferred, since you'll be working primarily with our Spanish-speaking community in SW Rancho Cucamonga. All applications must submit resume, a sample (breakfast, lunch, dinner), and their fee per class/bid.

  • You will teach one youth class after school, followed by an adult class directly after for a total of 24 sessions or 48 classes. Each class should include chef time and all materials for the class.

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION


The Healthy Cooking Instructor, bilingual preferred, is responsible for teaching hands-on, weekly classes to youth (ages 9-17) and adults on the basics of healthy cooking in the kitchen and increase knowledge among students regarding nutrition (I.e., vitamins and minerals in fruits and vegetables) and its importance in preventing obesity and diabetes. Lessons must include how to prepare fresh, budget friendly, plant-based meals and take students on a step-by-step process of how to chop, prepare, and cook meals. Instructor must print out recipes for all participants. Lesson for the day must include minimum of 3 recipes (one breakfast, one lunch, and one dinner recipes) Please see below for sample recipes. Students participating are expected to translate that knowledge into changes in their menu choices and family meal preparation techniques at home. Instructor must be available to teach once a week at a school site in Rancho Cucamonga from September through April for a total of 24 sessions (48 classes - 24 youth classes and 24 adult classes). Our budget for this program is $10,000, which includes instructor service and the purchase of materials. We are accepting bid offerings below $10,000. Instructor is responsible for purchasing the produce and pantry items needed for the cooking class before each class to feed between 30-50 students weekly. All cooking equipment for the class is provided (I.e., cutting boards, blender, bowls, propane gas stoves, oven, spoons, hand blender etc.).


ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Design and implement weekly healthy cooking class from September through April, following the school calendar.

  • Instruct 48 classes (24 youth and 24 adult classes) where each class consists of three healthy recipes each. You will teach the same recipe for a youth class, then an adult class, being able to adapt to the audience learning style and support.

  • 3:00-5:00 pm 2 hours for youth (ages 9-17) 15-20 students

  • 5:15- 7:15 p.m. 2 hour for adults at a school site in Rancho Cucamonga 15-30 students

  • Able to develop, prepare and teach multiple recipes (breakfast/snack, lunch, and dinner) a week to students, including shopping for all items needed for recipes before class.

  • Must prepare recipe handouts that include ingredient list and instructions (bilingual).

  • Passionate communicator able to show students hands-on, easy to follow recipes.

  • Manage all activities in the kitchen, including food preparation adults and youth.

  • Ensure efficient, cost-effective operation and able to purchase food before class and weekly food budget for approximately 30-50 class participants every week.

  • Ensure that food products, presentation, and plating are of the highest quality.

  • Assure adherence to all standard of food quality preparation, recipes, and presentation in conjunction with the specifications.

  • Monitor guarantee food service sanitation standards are met.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bilingual applicant highly needed

  • Enthusiastic, highly motivated and passionate about teaching students about healthy eating.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication experience, both verbal & written

  • Flexible and able to work with children, ability to work in high pressure situations

Education: A minimum of an associates' degree in culinary arts or a high school diploma combined with formal culinary training

Minimum 2 years cooking experience

Knowledge: Self-starter that loves to teach and cook. Must be effective in handling problems in the workplace, including anticipating, preventing, identifying and solving problems as necessary.

Must be effective at listening to, understanding, and clarifying concerns and issues.

Must be able to communicate clearly with students and city personnel.

Must be able to work independently and prioritize.

Skills: Must be able to convey information and ideas clearly.

Must have experience calculating figures and amounts and performing basic mathematical functions

Other: Must work well in stressful, high pressure situations and work well with children.
