BSU Wins $50,000 From Home Depot’s Retool Your School Competition

Funds Will Be Used to Provide More Resources for Students

(BOWIE, Md.) - Bowie State University has received a check for $50,000 for placing tenth in the Home Depot Retool Your School grant program competition and will use the funds to upgrade and modernize unused space in the Leonidas S. James Physical Education Complex for students to collaborate, hold study groups and tutoring sessions.

The funds will enable the university to install the latest technology including new computers, monitors, smart boards, digital screens, printers and furniture to inspire collaboration among students who utilize the space.

"Providing students the support and resources they need to continuously achieve academic excellence is what it's all about," said Brent Swinton, vice president for philanthropic engagement. "The renovations and additional equipment will benefit all students on campus but particularly those individuals who live in nearby residence halls or frequently go to the James Complex."

Bowie State competed with 16 other schools for the grand prize of $150,000 by submitting votes from students, faculty, staff, parents and friends. Fort Valley State University in Georgia amassed the most votes and won the top prize.

The Home Depot's Retool Your School grant program strives to give back to our nation's Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) what they have so generously given to their communities: a strong foundation, renewed purpose and distinctive character through campus uplift and beautification funding.
