Council is launching a series of affordable $5 seniors classes in six locations on the Sunshine Coast to add to the already large program of activities that support seniors to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.
One of the key targets of council's Sunshine Coast Social Strategy 2015 was for the region to maintain its ranking as the healthiest in Queensland and the Healthy Sunshine Coast Seniors program is a step in the right direction to achieving this.
Fitness instructor Danielle Thompson from Mind, Body, Soul, Fitness for You understands the specific needs of seniors when it comes to exercising.
'Exercise and health have no barriers, it is an individual's journey for a better life,' she said.
'Each class brings stability, balance, core, progressive functional movement and fall prevention to help maintain a full and independent life.'
Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said taking part in regular physical activity was important for everyone's health and unfortunately most Australians weren't getting the required recommended physical activity they needed.
'Since the launch of the Healthy Sunshine Coast Seniors program in 2016, we received numerous testimonials and feedback from community members thanking council for providing an opportunity for them to improve their wellbeing,' Cr McKay said.
'Back by popular demand, I am pleased to announce the Healthy Sunshine Coast Seniors will return with an even fuller program in 2017.
'Council, Sunshine 60 and Better, Resolve Fitness and YMCA Caloundra will deliver a range of fantastic physical fitness opportunities for our senior community.'
Seniors can select from a range of free and low-cost classes to provide a sense of wellbeing and ensure they remain connected to their community.
In addition to the $5 seniors classes, Resolve Fitness Club at Caloundra RSL are offering free seniors fitness classes on the first and third Wednesday of each month following by a free morning tea.
Seniors can also participate in the low-cost Sunshine 60 and Better Tai Chi, Ageless Grace, Belly Dancing, Gentle Exercise and Fun and Laughter classes.
'So if you are keen to start getting active but are not sure where to start, I'm sure Healthy Sunshine Coast will have a great option,' Cr McKay said.
