Cambodia Celebrates the 71st Anniversary of Membership in UNESCO

This year, 3 July marks the 71st Anniversary of Cambodia's membership in UNESCO, and UNESCO reopened its office in Phnom Penh, Cambodia in 1991. As a laboratory of ideas, the 71 years of partnership between UNESCO and Cambodia has seen significant advancement in ensuring inclusive and quality education; promoting the conservation of World Heritage Sites and intangible cultural heritage; fostering environment conservation and livelihoods development, and policy support in science, technology and innovation; and strengthening freedom of expression and media development for democracy, as means to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

On this occasion, Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Prime Minister Hun Sen said, "After Angkor was inscribed on the World Heritage List on 14 December 1992, an International Coordinating Committee for the Conservation and Development of the Angkor Historic Site (ICC-Angkor) was established in 1993. Its establishment stems from the conditions set by the World Heritage Committee for the recognition of the Angkor site on the UNESCO World Heritage List"

Cambodia is home to a rich collection of cultural heritage and a dynamic creative sector. Samdech Prime Minister stated, "Cambodia has three World Heritage Sites, including Angkor in 1992, the Temple of Preah Vihear in 2008 and the Sambor Prei Kuk site in 2017. Cambodia also has five intangible cultural treasures inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List including: Lkhon Khol of Wat Svay Andet in 2018, Chapei Dang Veng in 2016, Tugging rituals and games in 2015, Sbek Thom/Khmer Shadow theatre in 2005, and Royal Ballet of Cambodia in 2003."
