WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Rep. Phil Roe, M.D. (R-Tenn.) released the following statement after awarding the Snyder family of Jonesborough, Tennessee a replica of the Congressional Gold Medal on July 1, 2019:
'It was an honor to present a replica of the Congressional Gold Medal to the family of World War II veteran Donald Snyder. Donald served in the Office of Strategic Services' (OSS) 801st/492nd Bombardment Group - known as the 'Carpetbaggers'- that delivered supplies and weapons to resistance fighters in Europe. Their successful missions should be held at the highest honor and each individual should be recognized. Our nation has no higher commitment than to care for and to honor our servicemembers and veterans like Donald. I cannot thank him enough for his service, and his legacy will not be forgotten.'
Note: The OSS was the first American effort to implement a system of strategic intelligence, and is the foundation to our military and special operations today. The OSS employed around 13,000 individuals and fewer than 100 of these members are still alive today. In 2016, Congressman Roe voted to present the Congressional Gold Medal to the remaining members of the OSS.
