Torresdal indicated that the process for selecting a new children's librarian began in July, with Library staff and hiring committee members discussing the exacting standards for educational and professional attainment that would allow a successful candidate to continue the level of services currently offered by the Library.
'We were looking for someone dynamic, engaging, and enthusiastic about creating exceptional library experiences. Rachael clearly demonstrated these qualities to our committee- and her experience working with youth paired with her interest in literacy, creative writing, and creating community connections aligned with what we were looking for.' Library staff and several members of the Library Board of Trustees, Friends of the Library Board, City staff, and the public also participated in the search process.
Button has been working with children and youth for more than a decade and holds a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing and Environment from Iowa State University. She has taught subjects in multiple disciplines to students ranging from first grade through undergraduates. She's been a writer, a teacher, an adjunct professor, a Dean of Students, a Crystal Creek citizen artist, a naturalist, a farm hand, a wilderness trip leader, a marketing coordinator, and a high school cross country coach (among other things). Button's essays and poems have appeared in several noteworthy publications and one of her essays was nominated for a Pushcart Prize.
Torresdal added: 'We are thrilled to welcome Rachael to the Decorah Public Library team and we look forward to introducing her to the community.' Button is expected to begin her new role at the end of November.
