WASHINGTON - Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the House Judiciary Committee, today supported the introduction of two articles of impeachment against President Donald J. Trump. The articles, to be debated later this week in the Judiciary Committee, charge the President with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
Congressman Cohen made the following statement:
'When I was sworn in as a Member of Congress, I accepted the solemn duty of defending the Constitution. In upholding my oath, I am compelled to support President Trump's impeachment. Trump has repeatedly placed his personal political interests above the national interests he swore to preserve, protect and defend. The President asked the president of Ukraine to get involved in next year's American elections for Trump's benefit, robbing Americans of a fair election independent of foreign influence. He then tried to cover it up by repeatedly defying Congressional oversight. Throughout our history, brave men and women fought -- and died -- for the right to vote. This impeachment is about patriotism and duty, not politics. We are abiding by our oath to protect the Constitution and the future of our democracy.'
Congressman Cohen, the Chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, originally introduced five articles of impeachment against President Trump in November of 2017.
