Hydrogen as new coal in the German Ruhr area: Proton Motor is an innovative partner for C02-neutral residential district in Bochum

A few weeks ago, the glass energy center of the future of Germany's leading housing company Vonovia was ceremoniously opened by North Rhine-Westphalia`s Minister of Economic Affairs Prof. Dr. Andreas Pinkwart. In the Bochum-Weitmar estate, 81 apartments will be equipped with innovative energy technologies in the future. This includes an electrolyser for the production of hydrogen from electricity, fuel cell and heat pumps. The aim is for the adjacent buildings and households to be supplied with at least 60 percent self-sufficient or decentrally generated CO2-free heat. Vonovia generates 25 percent of the required electricity locally from its own photovoltaic systems on the roofs of its buildings.

After official commissioning in May 2020, Proton Motor has produced and supplied a 36 kW hydrogen fuel cell with direct grid connection for the design of the state-of-the-art machinery in the Ruhr area. Proton Motor engineer Beate Biesemeier was responsible for the contract project management with a focus on manufacturing and final acceptance. Minister Pinkwart emphasized during the ceremony that the project, which is funded by the state of NRW with EUR 5.3 million, makes an important contribution to the energy transition and climate protection. He additionally explained, it will generate impulses for the energy supply in other urban districts so that they can be designed ecologically and economically.
