Swedish companies to produce 400,000t of SAF

Biofuels research and engineering company Swedish Biofuels has formed a partnership with consultancy Cowi to produce 400,000t of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) with the construction of three plants in Sweden.

The first plant is expected to be online within three years, and will use the Alcohol-to-Jet (AtJ) process to produce the SAF.

The first plant will be located near Stockholm's Arlanda airport, and will produce 20,000t of SAF by 2025. It is supported by the European Commission. It will use green ethanol feedstock, and produce SAF from green off-gases and green hydrogen. It will also be able to produce other sustainable fuels, such as diesel and gasoline, at product ratios "driven by market demand".

Demand for SAF is being driven primarily by government mandates. Sweden and Norway are SAF-mandated countries. The Swedish SAF mandate is based on reducing emissions.

AtJ is an approved way of producing SAF, and other suppliers of the product include Lanzajet, which is building an AtJ facility in Georgia, US.
