Murphy Statement on White House Meeting with President Biden to Discuss Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill and Build Back Better Act

WASHINGTON-U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy of Winter Park, Fla., issued the following statement after she and a small group of other congressional Democrats met with President Biden at the White House to discuss the path forward for enacting the bipartisan infrastructure bill and the Build Back Better Act:

"My meeting with the President was positive and productive, with a candid exchange of ideas and a shared sense of purpose among all of us present. I emphasized the importance of the House voting on-and passing-the bipartisan infrastructure bill on September 27, ideally with a combination of Democratic and Republican votes. President Biden deserves tremendous credit for his role in crafting this historic bill, which will dramatically improve quality of life for my constituents, while creating good-paying jobs and helping to combat climate change.

"I also made clear I will continue working in good faith to help enact a fiscally-disciplined Build Back Better Act that empowers working families. In order to become law, the size and scope of the bill-in terms of both its spending and tax provisions-will need to be more precisely targeted. This fundamental fact, rooted in political reality, must be accepted.

"Finally, I expressed my strong preference for making bold investments in a few critical areas, like addressing the existential threat of climate change; providing workers with paid leave; helping families access child care; shoring up the Affordable Care Act; and enhancing proven programs like the child tax credit, the child and dependent care tax credit, the earned income tax credit, and Pell grants. By working together, and finding common ground, I know we can get this done."
