Mother Charged After Car with 1-Year-Old Inside is Stolen Outside Convenience Store October 19, 2021

Quick response by South Precinct officers today led to the recovery of a stolen maroon Honda Civic which had been left running outside a convenience store with a one-year-old boy in a rear car seat.

The mother of the child, Zyaire Lewis, 22, called police at 11:40 a.m. to report that her car had been stolen from the 7-Eleven at 340 Harding Place. Lewis had reportedly briefly been inside the store and when she exited, her car and son were gone.

South Precinct officers quickly flooded the area and within 15 minutes had located the car, unoccupied, in the 400 block of Metroplex Drive. The child was unharmed. Lewis is charged by citation with child endangerment.

The suspect is a white man with short dark hair who appears to be in his early to mid-30s. He has several neck tattoos and wore a dark green t-shirt, dark pants, and a baseball cap. He is approximately 5'8" tall with a thin build.

The MNPD reminds motorists that leaving your car running and unattended, even for a short amount of time, can result in vehicle theft.
