Number of deaths increases again

Vienna,2021-11-18 - According to preliminary results by Statistics Austria, 1 903 people died in calendar week 44 (from 1 to 7 November 2021). In in the previous calendar week 43 (from 25 to 31 October 2021), when 1 877 people died, this number was slightly lower, but considerably higher than in calendar week 42 (1 716 deaths). By calendar week 44, the weekly number of deaths has increased four weeks in row (+298 people since calendar week 40). Currently (calendar week 44), the number of deaths is at a similar level to the previous year (2020: 1 886 deaths), but 18.7% higher than the five-year average for the same calendar week of the last five years 2016 to 2020. Compared to the five years prior to the start of the Corona pandemic (2015-2019), the number of deaths in calendar week 44 of 2021 increased by 25.8%.
