Christine Lewis Appointed as Virginia Beach Director of Elections and General Registrar

​After a nationwide search, the Virginia Beach Electoral Board has appointed Christine Lewis as the next Director of Elections and General Registrar following the retirement of the previous director. Her appointment is effective on April 26, 2022. Lewis has been serving as the acting director since March 2022.

Christine Lewis joined the Virginia Beach Voter Registration and Elections office in 2004 and has since served in nearly every facet of election preparation, execution and voter registration. In 2007 she was promoted to senior registrar and later deputy registrar in 2017. In addition to her years of experience, she is a certified Elections and Registration Administrator, credentialed by the Election Center at Auburn University which provides annual training on election-related topics. She has earned the title of Virginia Registered Election Official, from the Election Center and the Voter Registrars Association of Virginia. Lewis has completed multiple leadership classes offered by the City and served on the Inclusion and Diversity Council for three years. She is also a member of the International Association of Government Officials.

In sharing her appointment, Virginia Beach Electoral Board members noted that Lewis has the skills and expertise to manage all aspects of elections administration, including responding to voter or candidate questions and concerns, and maintaining a focus on election security.

About the General Registrar and Electoral Board: The Voter Registration & Elections office maintains the current registration and elections process for Virginia Beach voters and meets mandatory state and federal standards for access to voter registration, such as the regulations of the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) and the Help America Vote Act (HAVA). The Electoral Board is responsible for the conduct of the elections and for the verification of election results.
