Traffic Closure Notices


Ellis Boulevard and E Avenue NW Intersection Closure

Beginning Thursday, June 16, the intersection of Ellis Boulevard and E Avenue NW will be closed for the construction of a roundabount associated with the Ellis Boulevard Connector project. This closure is expected to be in place until approximately the end of August. Traffic to follow posted detour, or seek an alternate route.

This project will span a two-year period, and construction this year includes preparation for extending 6th Street NW to the intersection of Ellis Boulevard at E Avenue and beginning renovation of existing 6th Street NW from B Avenue to 1st Avenue. Renovations include water main extension, sidewalks, railroad crossing modifications, on-street bicycle facilities, and the construction of roundabouts at E Avenue and F Avenue intersections. The Union Pacific Railroad crossings at I Avenue NW, 10th Street SE, B Avenue/C Avenue NW, the pedestrian crossing between 1 Avenue E and 2nd Avenue SE, and the pedestrian crossing between 2nd Avenue and 3rd Avenue SE will also be closed as part of this project.

Mt. Vernon Road SE Lane Reduction

Effective immediately, eastbound traffic on Mt. Vernon Road SE is reduced to one lane at 19th Street for sewer maintenance. Work is expected to take two (2) days.

J Street SW Closure at Railroad Tracks
Effective Tuesday, June 14, J Street SW will be closed between 36th Avenue SW and 37th Avenue SW for railroad crossing improvements. Work is expected to take two (2) days.

E Avenue NW Closure

Effective Monday, June 13, E Avenue NW will be closed between 24th Street NW and Westwood Drive NW for street repairs. Work is expected to take one (1) week, weather permitting. Traffic to seek alternate route.

1st Avenue W and Wiley Boulevard Intersection Closure

Effective Wednesday, June 8, the intersection of 1st Avenue West and Wiley Boulevard SW will be closed for the construction of a roundabout. Work is expected to take approximately four (4) months. Traffic to follow posted detour, or seek an alternate route.

Cottage Grove Avenue and Forest Drive SE Intersection Closure

Effective Monday, June 6, the intersection of Cottage Grove Avenue and Forest Drive SE will be closed for intersection improvements. Work is expected to take approximately four (4) weeks, weather permitting. Traffic to follow posted detour, or seek an alternate route.

3rd Avenue and 1st Street SE Intersection Closure

Effective Monday, June 6, the intersection of 3rd Avenue and 1st Street SE will be closed in all directions, as storm sewer improvements continue for permanent flood protection. Repairs are expected to take approximately seven (7) weeks. Traffic to follow posted detours, or seek alternate routes.

Bowling Street SW Intersection Closure

Effective Monday, June 6, the intersection of Bowling Street and 41st Avenue SW will be closed, as the Bowling Street SW, from north of 50th Avenue Drive to 29th Avenue Sidewalk Infill project continues. Traffic to follow posted detour or seek an alternate route. The intersection is expected to be closed for one (1) month. Access to and from 41st Avenue Drive SW will be maintained.

Project improvements include adding pedestrian accommodations along Bowling Street SW, from north of 50th Avenue Drive to 41st Avenue SW, and from south of Tamara Drive to 29th Avenue Drive SW. The project will also replace curb ramps at intersections within this area, as well as select and partial intersection reconstruction, grading, driveway reconstruction, storm sewer improvements, and construction of retaining walls.

1st Street SW Northbound Lane Closure

Effective immediately, Wednesday, May 25, 1st Street SW is closed to northbound traffic between 11th Avenue and 8th Avenue for storm sewer improvements associated with permanent flood control. Work is expected to take approximately five (5) weeks, weather permitting. The southbound lane is open; northbound traffic to follow posted detour or seek alternate route.

12th Avenue SE - Phase II Construction Update | June 14, 2022
The second phase of the 12th Avenue SE project between 16th Street and 17th Street continues. The contractor is currently working on underground utility installation. Once underground utilities are complete the contractor will prepare subgrade and then construct new pavement. New pavement construction is anticipated to begin in July. The second phase of the 12th Avenue SE project is on track to be completed in the 2022 construction season.

Traffic detour routing is signed, please follow the route to Mount Vernon Road SE and 15th Street SE to navigate around construction.

15th Avenue Roadway Improvements Update | June 14, 2022

Traffic will continue to be reduced to one lane. The northerly lane is closed at this time. This configuration will continue until all underground work and new concrete pavement sections are complete. The current traffic pattern will remain in place until the beginning of July. In July, watch for the traffic pattern to switch. At that time, the north lane of 15th Avenue SW will be open for traffic and the south lane will be closed for construction improvements. While the south lane is under construction the intersection of L Street SW, 3rd Street SW, and J Street SW will remain available for crossing traffic.

The 15th Avenue SW project is on schedule to be completed in 2022. Thank you for your patience while we continue construction.

C Street SW Construction Update | June 14

The new intersection of C Street SW and Wilson Avenue Drive is partially open. Turns to the north or left from Wilson Avenue Drive to C Street SW are allowed. Turns to the south or right from Wilson Avenue Drive to C Street SW will remain closed for the remainder of the project schedule. One-way traffic will be allowed from Wilson Avenue Drive SW to Lauren Drive SW. Traffic will be completely open in both directions between Lauren Drive and Hawthorne Drive SW. Upcoming work includes new sidewalk near Tanager Place and the completion of sidewalk, sidewalk ramps, and intersection details.

The roadway is expected to be fully operational to traffic shortly after the 4th of July holiday.

Center Point Road NE from Coe Road to Lincoln Avenue Construction Update | May 10

Starting Monday, May 9, Center Point Road NE was reduced to one lane (left lane closed) from Coe Road to Lincoln Avenue for utility and roadway improvements. The improvements will be constructed one side at a time with the lane closure anticipated to move from the left side to the right side later this summer.

Work is expected to be completed by the end of fall 2022, with a second phase from Lincoln Avenue to J Avenue to follow in 2023.

Oakland Road NE Improvements Resume Next Week

Improvements have resumed on Oakland Road NE, between Miami Court and Regent Street. Oakland Road will be closed to thru traffic for the duration of the project, with the closure area moving from south to north as construction progresses.

The full project on Oakland Road/Old Marion Road NE stretches from Center Street to Regent Street. Improvements include pavement, on-street bike lanes, sidewalk and ADA sidewalk ramp improvements, and utilities (water main, storm sewer, sanitary sewer). The project is expected to wrap up this fall.

Blairs Ferry Road NE Lane Reductions

Effective Monday, May 2, lane reductions will occur in both directions on Blairs Ferry Road NE between 2nd Avenue and 6th Avenue in Hiawatha for railroad crossing improvements.. Work is expected to take four (4) weeks. Traffic should expect delays, or seek an alternate route.

B Avenue NW Closure

Effective Monday, May 2, B Avenue NW will be closed between 17th Street and Highland Drive for roadway improvements. Work is expected to take three (3) weeks, weather permitting.

6th Street SW Construction Update | May 11

Active construction continues on the east side of 6th Street SW including sidewalk installation up to 27th Avenue and retaining wall construction between Cherry Drive and 27th Avenue. Shortly, work on the retaining wall south of Hometown Auto Group will begin. As the retaining walls are completed, sidewalk installation between Wilson Avenue and 27th Avenue will follow. Finished grading, topsoil placement, sodding, and placement of permanent signage will also be starting soon.

On the west side, the old asphalt on 6thStreet from north of Wilson Avenue to the north entrance to Altorfer Machinery has been milled. Remaining milling to south of 33rdAvenue is expected to be completed by early June. Remaining water main installation on the west side, from 27thAvenue to Wilson Avenue, is expected to begin shortly.

Storm sewer and culvert installation on the west side will follow the water main work. When that occurs, traffic will be shifted to the east half of the roadway with a single travel lane provided in each direction.

Center Point Road NE from Coe Road to Lincoln Avenue Construction Update | May 10

Lindale Trail Project Begins | May 2

The City of Cedar Rapids will start work on the Lindale Trail Phase 1 project this month. Blairs Ferry Road will remain open throughout the course of the project with at least one lane of traffic in each direction. Starting this week, outside lane closures will go into effect along Blairs Ferry Road for approximately two weeks in preparation for construction.Construction work is scheduled to begin May 9. Access to the Collins Aerospace driveway nearest Oakwood Avenue NE will be closed or have reduced width during the initial construction phase.

Work includes the extension of the trail from its current terminus near C Avenue NE and Blairs Ferry Road to Council Street. The project includes 10 foot wide trail, pedestrian tunnel under Blairs Ferry Road, updated ADA crossings at the C Avenue NE and Blairs Ferry Road intersection and at Rockwell Drive NE, and new sidewalk connections to nearby businesses. New trees will be planted along the trail. The project will also incorporate stormwater work and water main improvements.

The project is scheduled to be completed in fall 2022.

Edgewood Road SW Lane Reductions

On Wednesday, April 20, traffic signal and curb ramp repairs will begin on Edgewood Road SW. For approximately four (4) weeks, northbound traffic on Edgewood Road SW will be reduced to one lane at the intersections of 29th Avenue and 12th Avenue. Once work is completed in the northbound lanes, work will begin in the southbound lanes of these intersections. Southbound traffic will then be reduced to one lane for approximately four (4) weeks.

O Avenue NW Closure

Starting on Tuesday, March 15, O Avenue NW will be closed to thru traffic between Edgewood Road and 27th Street, as part of ongoing pavement and utility improvements. The closure will begin just west of 27th Street and move west as work progresses. This construction season, traffic impacts will include rolling full closures and lane closures throughout the O Avenue project.

This year's work on O Avenue focuses on the segment between Edgewood Road and 27th Street NW. The project includes complete roadway reconstruction, sidewalk, storm sewer, water main, sanitary sewer improvements, and installation of retaining walls in select areas. This year is scheduled to be the final year of improvements along the O Avenue corridor, with upgrades spanning four years.

1st Street SE Southbound Closure

Effective immediately, Monday, March 14, 1st Street SE is closed to southbound traffic between 3rd Avenue and 4thAvenue for storm sewer improvements associated with permanent flood control. Work is expected to take approximately three (3) months. The northbound lane is open; southbound traffic to follow posted detour or seek alternate route.

Portion of Sac & Fox Trail to Close for Indian Creek Waterway Cleanup

Portions of the Sac & Fox Trail will close beginning Monday, December 13. Contractors will be cleaning up and removing debris and trees damaged in the August 2020 reecho along the Indian Creek waterway. The first section to close is from the Bertram Road railroad bridge (at the confluence of Indian Creek and the Cedar River) to the intersection of the trail with Mount Vernon Road (see map). The length of the closures has not yet been determined.

North Side Portion of Cedar Lake Trail Closed | October 26

The southern portion of Cedar Lake Trail was reopened Monday. The northern portion of the trail is now closed and will remain closed for approximately two years for construction of the flood control system. Click map showing closed section (red) and open section (green).
