Scottsdale Update - April 23, 2021

Scottsdale adopts anti-discrimination ordinance. The Scottsdale City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to adopt an anti-discrimination ordinance, which prohibits discrimination based on actual or perceived race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability. The ordinance represents the city's commitment to anti-discrimination and fair treatment of residents, visitors and employees in the Scottsdale community, and the City Council's support and value for diversity and inclusiveness.

The ordinance provides a clear and comprehensive mandate for the prevention of discrimination in employment, housing, places of public accommodation, and city services, programs and activities. The ordinance provides a mechanism for responding to complaints and violators are subject to civil prosecution. The ordinance goes into effect May 20. Read the ordinance and learn more.

Bus route changes start Monday. Beginning Monday, April 26, riders traveling from Phoenix to Scottsdale Community College will no longer need to transfer to the trolley to complete their trip. Bus route 50, which runs primarily along Camelback Road, will be extended to the college. The following additional transit route changes will also take effect Monday:

• The 68th/Camelback trolley route ends south of Camelback Road on Goldwater Boulevard.

• Bus route 50 will remain on Chaparral Road between Granite Reef Road and 86th Street rather than traveling to Montebello Avenue.

• The Old Town Trolley remains indefinitely suspended.

New routes can be viewed on our updated transfer map.

All trolley routes will continue to run every 20 minutes between approximately 6 a.m. and 7 p.m., weekdays only. Request a brochure with new routes and schedules by calling 480-312-7250 or emailing Jennifer Banks.

Federal law continues to require transit riders to wear face coverings on buses and trolleys and at transit stops.

Summer class registration starts Monday! Registration for Parks and Recreation summer classes begins at 8 a.m. Monday, April 26, for residents and 8 a.m. Tuesday, April 27, for non-residents. Summer programs take place during June, July and August. These include tennis lessons and leagues, swim lessons, water exercise classes, youth activities, adult programs and more. Health protocols will be in place for all programs, and they may include physical distancing, mask requirements and temperature checks. 'Riots, Racism and Reconciliation' - understanding our shared experiences. Join us for a virtual dialogue hosted by the Scottsdale Human Relations Commission at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 28. This conversation will review the 2020 Scottsdale riot, local media coverage involving hate crimes and solicit audience stories and conversation so we can better understand these important shared experiences as we continue working toward a Scottsdale for all people. This discussion, moderated by Dr. Joel Martin, will feature content from a TedTalk by Baratunde Thurston to help us explore and better understand the racialized experiences people may have. Veg out Saturdays at the Old Town Farmers Market. The market features more than 100 local growers and specialty food producers. Find a variety of organic and pesticide-free produce, seasonal specialties, flowers, natural meats and free-range eggs from Arizona growers. You'll also find cheese, freshly baked artisan breads, jams, tamales, and so much more. The market runs from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays through May, in the public parking lot at 3806 N. Brown Ave.
