Denver Awarded International Environmental Management Certification

Published on April 22, 2024

Environmental stewardship and sustainability are key to a vibrant Denver and are integrated not only in city policies, but also throughout city operations. The City of Denver proudly announced today its recertification to theISO 14001 Environmental Management Standard, a voluntary, international designation that signifies Denver is "walking the walk" when it comes to lessening our environmental impact.

The recertification follows the hard work of the Denver Environmental Performance Program (DEPP) administered through the Denver Department of Public Health & Environment (DDPHE), which houses environmental procedures, training documents, and compliance obligations across all city agencies. The DEPP's goal is to promote environmental stewardship and protection, support the city's drive for sustainability, and ensure city operations are in full compliance with environmental law.

Originally achieving ISO 14001 Certification in 2010, Denver demonstrated its dedication to environmental management through maintenance and compliance with the DEPP. However, due to challenges stemming from the recent global pandemic, Denver temporarily lost its certification. Through the collective efforts of all 27 city agencies and the determination of city personnel, Denver has been recertified- a huge milestone.

"ISO 14001 certification is a testament to Denver's commitment to environmental stewardship and the hard work of Denver city employees to ensure environmental compliance and sustainability in all of our operations" said Mayor Mike Johnston. "This recertification affirms our dedication to preserving Denver's natural resources and enhancing the well-being of our community."

ISO 14001 certification was awarded to the City of Denver following a comprehensive assessment of Denver's Environmental Management System by a third-party evaluator. The certification process involved extensive documentation review, onsite audits, programmatic reviews, and verification of conformance with ISO 14001 criteria.

With ISO 14001 certification, the City of Denver further solidifies its position as a leader in environmental compliance. By integrating environmental considerations into its decision-making processes and engaging partners in environmental initiatives, the city is committed to reducing its environmental footprint and promoting a healthier, more sustainable future.
