AKRON, OH, August 20, 2019 - Summa Health System-Akron Campus has been awarded the Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center certification from The Joint Commission, in collaboration with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. By earning this honor, Summa Health became the first hospital in Ohio to be awarded this certification from The Joint Commission.
The certification demonstrates that Summa Health meets the rigorous standards for performing a mechanical endovascular thrombectomy (EVT), a specialized surgical procedure used to remove a blood clot from the brain during an ischemic stroke. In a disease where time is critical, it is vital that the community has local access to a center with this specialized capability.
Summa Health's stroke team, led by Dr. Susana Bowling, director of the Summa Health Neuroscience Institute, had to comply with strict guidelines to earn this prestigious certification. Endovascular Neurosurgery Specialists Dr. Alexander Venizelos and Dr. Aashish Anand had to meet the highest standards of subspecialty training and all nurses caring for stroke patients completed advanced stroke education training as part of the certification process.
'Stroke is a devastating medical emergency that affects the quality of life of both patients and their loved ones,' said Dr. Bowling. 'The disease affects thousands of people in our area every year and, as such, it is critically important that we continue to offer the best and most advanced treatment options for victims of stroke.'
