05.04.2021

Yerevan Municipality has started the 'EU4Yerevan: Solar Community' program which is implemented within the frames of 'Covenant of Mayors' initiative. Solar photovoltaic panels are being installed on the roofs of blocks of flats. 100 blocks of flats have been included in the program instead of 90 previously selected ones.

According to the head of Development and Investment Programs Department of Yerevan Municipality Narine Abelyan, it is a grant program the cost of which is 1 million 250 thousand euro, 250 thousand euro of which is co-financed by the Municipality. The blocks of flats were selected on the ground of certain standards: they are 9-14-stored buildings with flat and sun-facing side roofs. Social component was taken into account as well.
The program stipulates energy saving in public areas.
According to the national expert of the group supporting the program 'Demonstrative projects of 'Covenant of Mayors' Andre Ohanyan, the program will make it possible to save up to 50% of energy.

360 w panels produced in Armenia have been installed on the roofs. They generate clean and renewable energy which is highly important according to the consultant for solar stations of 'EU4Yerevan:Solar Community' program Vahan Madoyan.
Due to the generated energy all porches, staircases of the entrances will be lit. The electricity lines and spotlights have been installed. Only the systems are to be turned on.

The engineer for illumination Arthur Hovhannisyan informed that spotlights are provided with new LED lamps with light, sound and movement sensors. It means that the lights can be turned on even by the voice of an entering resident. The solar energy will be used for night illumination as well. After being installed the solar panels become the property of the residents and can serve 15-20 years.
The program also has a social component. Needy families will be provided with energy saving lamps to reduce energy consumption at home. The results of the first and exclusive program will be noticeable in autumn when the activities will be finished in all buildings and the systems will be put into operation.
