Chemistry Junior selected for competitive internship in public health

Chemistry junior Isabella Dattilio (expected graduation May 2025) has been selected for the highly competitive Pitt Public Health Undergraduate Scholars Program (PHUSP). The program is scheduled for the summer of 2024 at the University of Pittsburgh. Isabella is an ardent supporter of public health and is pursuing her chemistry degree, with a focus on public health courses. Her research, supervised by Dr. Peter Rosado Flores, involves the synthesis of mesalamine-capped nanoparticles for the treatment of Irritable Bowel Disease. Post-graduation, she aspires to pursue an MD/PhD degree, aligning with her passion for research and patient care. Isabella also recently showcased her work admirably at the Posters at the Capitol event.

The Pitt Public Health Undergraduate Scholars Program is an eight-week residential program crafted to inspire college students to contemplate careers in public health. It places emphasis on health equity, maternal and child health, environmental justice and climate and health.

PHUSP provides internship placements, classroom instruction, group activities and mentorship to afford students opportunities for growth, education and awareness regarding the pivotal role public health professionals play in fostering safe and healthy communities. The program's overarching objective is to promote health equity by fostering diversity within the public health workforce.
