Apply for the Industrial Fuel Switching Competition Phase 2: demonstration projects

The Industrial Fuel Switching () Competition aims to support the development of fuel switching and fuel switch enabling technologies for UK industry. This includes fuel switches from high carbon fuels to hydrogen, electricity, biomass, and other low carbon fuels.

Phase 2 provides up to £49.4 million in funding with £1 million to £6 million available per project.

Funding will be awarded through Small Business Research Initiative () contracts, providing 100% funding for pre-commercial solutions.

Funding is divided into 3 lots:

  • fuel switch and fuel switch enabling technologies for hydrogen
  • fuel switch and fuel switch enabling technologies for electrification
  • fuel switch and fuel switch enabling technologies for biomass, wastes, and other net zero compatible fuels

Eligibility

Phase 2 is open to all industrial sectors and fuel switching technology developers, whether or not they have taken part in Phase 1.

It supports fuel switch and fuel switch enabling technologies at Technology Readiness Level () 4 to 7 at the start of the project.

How to apply

1. Read the guidance document and watch the launch event recording (below) for information on the competition and the application process.

If you have any questions on the process or eligibility criteria, please raise them using this form by 2pm GMT, 4 November 2022. Questions submitted after this date may not be answered.

We will reply to queries we judge to be of material significance on this page by 5pm GMT, 9 November 2022.

2. Complete and submit the registration form by 2pm GMT, 11 November 2022.

If you do not register by this deadline, you will be unable to apply. If you do submit a registration form, you are under no obligation to apply.

Once you have registered, you will receive a password to access the application form.

3. Complete and submit the online application form with the declaration documents, by 2pm GMT, 25 November 2022.

The application form will close for submissions immediately after this deadline, and you won't be able to submit any further materials, so we recommend that you allow time for file uploads to complete. We will not accept late submissions.

We have published a Word version of the application form to help you prepare your application, but you must submit your final application using the online form.

Industrial Fuel Switching Phase 2 launch event

We will publish a launch event video with more details about the competition shortly - see also the event presentation in the Documents section on this page.

We are holding an online question and answer session on 10 October 2022 at 2pm - booking link available shortly. We recommend watching the launch video prior to joining that event.

We will also provide an online matchmaking platform for prospective Phase 2 applicants to find suitable partners or collaborators.

Background

The Industrial Fuel Switching () Competition of up to £55 million forms part of the £1 billion Net Zero Innovation Portfolio (). aims to accelerate the commercialisation of innovative clean energy technologies and processes through the 2020s and 2030s. Switching industry to lower carbon fuels will be critical for meeting the UK's legally binding commitment to achieve Net Zero by 2050.

Phase 1: Feasibility studies is closed to applications. 21 projects were awarded between £50,000 and £300,000 funding per project under Phase 1, covering hydrogen, electrification and other low carbon fuel switching technologies.
