Commenting ahead of Tuesday's Withdrawal Deal vote, Stephen Phipson, CEO of EEF, the manufacturers' organisation said:
Manufacturing and engineering companies employ people in every constituency across the country. Their products power our lives, every day: the cars we drive, the technology behind our schools and hospitals, even the meals we buy at our local takeaway. Britain makes amazing things, in vast quantities. UK manufacturing is back on the global map, due to the brilliance of our companies which have made such a success of supply chains and the modern marvel of just-in-time logistics.
A no-deal scenario would be disastrous for the 2.7 million people who work in manufacturing and for the millions more employed in supporting industries. Families and communities would be left hanging in the balance, affecting real people who need the well-paid jobs that manufacturing provides alongside its contribution of almost half of Britain's global exports.
These are the facts MPs need to consider when they are making their voting choice tomorrow on the Government's Withdrawal Deal. This deal, while not perfect, meets the needs of manufacturing - zero tariffs, regulatory alignment with the EU, and no slide back to hard borders - and so protects millions of jobs, the country's economy, and the livelihoods of their constituents. Let's take a step forward tomorrow, and not go backwards.
