Eid al-Fitr (April 9 to April 10)

Eid al-Fitr is an international Muslim celebration, marking the end of the month-long dawn-to-sunset fasting of Ramadan. Eid-al Fitr is contingent on the sighting of a new moon, with this year's commemoration predicted to be April 9. It is the earlier of the two official holiday celebrated within Islam, the other being Eid al-Adha. Celebratory traditions vary depending on the community but usually include buying new clothes, dressing up together, community gatherings, and gift-giving. Charity, prayer, and festivals with food and activities are also common practices for Eid al-Fitr.

This year, the Islamic and Cultural Center Bosniak of Des Moines is hosting its first Eid Fest. The festival will include vendors, food trucks, activities for children, and an indoor shopping bazaar. In addition, there will be a chess tournament in honor of Rahmetli Azrudin Sivac. The event is open to the public. If you're interested in celebrating and learning more about Eid al-Ftir, the festival will take place on Saturday, April 13 at 12 PM - 3 PM at the Islamic and Cultural Center Bosniak of Des Moines (17630 Bosniak Lane, Granger, IA 50109).
