Public Works' Week in Review for March 28, 2024

The Public Works Department is made up of various sub-departments including Fleet, Line Repair, Streets/Stormwater and Traffic, Wastewater, and Water. Each week, over 100 employees are responsible for the maintenance, monitoring, and improvement of existing and new infrastructure across League City which includes everything from roadways and traffic lights to storm drains, sewers, and water production.

Below are some tips and projects they are working on:

Manhole Entry and Repair

This week the Line Repair I & I (Inflow and Infiltration) crew performed a manhole repair on Pebble Beach at South Shore Harbor. The crew received a concern from the resident about a cracked driveway around the manhole. During the investigation and inspection, the crew found 2 holes inside the manhole requiring immediate repair to prevent infiltration.

Prior to entering the manhole, the crew must follow several safety measures before entering the confined space. The crew must conduct an atmospheric test for hazardous gases that could cause serious injury or death. The jobsite must have confined space rescue equipment. This includes a confined space respiratory protection mask w/ oxygen, gas monitors, fresh air blower, a body harness w/retrieval gear, and a tripod. The individual entering the manhole must have the proper P.P.E. (Personal Protective Equipment), hard hat, glasses, gloves, radio, and boots.

These repairs were done by entering the manhole by a maintenance worker. The job was successfully completed and most importantly, no employee was injured in the process.

McFarland Road Rehabilitation

McFarland Road is a limestone gravel road 2.27 miles long on the southwestern edge of League City. An increase in traffic has caused potholes and degraded the stability of the gravel road base. The League City Streets and Stormwater Departments have been working diligently to repair the deteriorating roadway. First the Stormwater Department regraded the open ditches on the east and west sides of the roadway. In conjunction the Vegetation Management Division has been removing all trees along the flowline and roadside slopes to help with drainage and maintenance of the roadway ditches. After the road slopes were repaired and restored the Streets Department regraded the roadway, added stabilize gravel as needed, and repacked the road creating a smooth rehabilitated roadway.

Repairs on City's Concrete Plant

The concrete plant is down due to a lack of air pressure and a burning smell coming from the diesel motor. The technicians were able to make the repairs by replacing the control relays and throttle solenoid.
