The Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Abdulla Shahid today participated in the Forty-Third Annual Meeting of the Ministers for Foreign Affairs of the Group of 77 (G77) which was held in the sidelines of the ongoing 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
In delivering his remarks today, Minister Shahid said that since its inception, the G77 pledged to speak as one voice in advocating to transform the international economic system to a more inclusive one, fight to reduce inequalities, and promote the idea of common, yet differentiated responsibilities to create a more prosperous and just world.
Minister Shahid also underscored the importance of G77 ensuring that commitments made under the Paris Agreement, 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Addis Ababa Action Agenda, and the Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction translate into meaningful action. This is vital in protecting the livelihoods and wellbeing of the people.
At the end of the meeting, a Ministerial Declaration was adopted by Member States.
G77 is a coalition within the United Nations comprising of 134 developing countries with the intention of promoting collective economic interests and enhance their joint negotiating capacity. The Maldives plays an active role within G77 in leading negotiations on climate change and environmental protection.
