UH Portage Medical Center Maintains Top Hospital Safety Grade From The Leapfrog Group

RAVENNA, Ohio - University Hospitals (UH) Portage Medical Center has received yet another "A" Hospital Safety Grade for the spring, a national recognition from The Leapfrog Group that celebrates hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers that protect patients from preventable harm and errors.

"Holding ourselves accountable each and every day is vital on the journey to Zero Harm," explained Bill Benoit, MOT, MBA, FACHE, Chief Operating Officer, UH Portage Medical Center. Our team has diligently focused on reducing hospital-acquired infections and conditions, pressure injuries, sepsis mortality and post-op deep vein thrombosis. We track and share our metrics to keep our teams constantly apprised of our progress. We also continuously track our patient experience measures of nursing communication, physician communication and transitions in care."

The Leapfrog Group assigns an "A," "B," "C," "D" or "F" grade to hospitals across the country twice each year based on more than 30 national performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm. These publicly available hospital grades are intended as an important tool to empower patients. UH Portage Medical Center also received "A" grades in the spring and fall of 2023.

"Less than 30 percent of the nearly 3,000 hospitals across the country achieve this high mark," added Benoit. "We appreciate our caregivers' efforts in continuing to focus on safety and quality care to ensure an outstanding experience for our patients."

The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent, and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring. To see UH Portage Medical Center's full grade details and to access patient tips for staying safe in the hospital, visit HospitalSafetyGrade.org.
