Minister Pandor to participate in the AU Executive Council meeting in Addis Ababa

The Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Dr Naledi Pandor, is scheduled to visit Addis Ababa, Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, where she will participate in the 39th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union (AU). The meeting will be held on 14 and 15 October 2021.

It is expected that the Executive Council will consider a number of reports, including:

  • The Report of the Activities of the Permanent Representative Committee (PRC).
  • The Report by the Joint Sitting of the Ministerial Committee on Scales of Assessment and Contributions and the Committee of 15 regarding the 2022 Budget of the AU, and issues related to the General Administration and Supervision of the Organisation.
  • The report on the status of COVID-19 in the Continent as well as the report on the Operationalisation of the Africa Centre for Disease Control.

The meeting of the Executive Council will take place amid the ongoing socio-economic challenges facing the Continent due to the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Executive Council will also take place against the backdrop of ongoing challenges facing the Continent regarding the availability and affordability of vaccines. The Continent is one of the least vaccinated regions and it is unlikely that the Continent will make head way in terms of mass vaccination in the short to medium term.

The Executive Council is further expected to consider matters relating to peace and security on the Continent.
